September 2-5: What's Happening in Kindergarten This Week?

Journey's Reading:
Last week in reading we learned about families.  Our question was "how are all families alike?"  The answer was that every family is special.
This week we will be on the topic of going to school, and the rules we have in school.

ELA: Weekly Focus
Domain: Civics
Theme: Going To School
Essential Question:
Why do we have rules at school?

Read Aloud: Friends at School

Big Book: How Do Dinosaurs Go To School?

Informaitonal Text: My School Bus

Comprehension Skills:
Understanding Characters
Author's Purpose

High Frequency Word: like (We have now had the words I, like)

Phonemic Awareness: Beginning Sounds (When we hear 3 beginning sounds, which 2 sounds are alike or words begin with the same sound)

Fluency: Pause for punctuation (When we read pause when we come to a punctuation mark.  Last week we learned that we read with expression)

Letter Names: Pp, Qq, Rr, Ss. Tt

Vocabulary Strategies: Antonyms (opposites)

Grammar: Nouns for Places
(Last week learned that nouns are people.  This week we will learn that nouns are places, and next week we will learn that nouns are things)

Writing: Narrative
Focus Trait: Word Choice

Labels (We are learning how to label items in our pictures)

Envision Math:
We will be finishing topic 2 this week.  We are still working with the numbers 0-5.  We are learning more about the terms fewer (less), more (greater) and the same (equal to).  Fewer is very difficult for our students.  Work at home with groups of items.  Ask them to tell you which is fewer, more, and if groups are the same as.

Looking forward to a great week in kindergarten
